New Generation EEG Devices for Regional and Remote Health Care

EEG, or electroencephalogram, records brain wave activity and is used in the diagnosis of conditions such as epilepsy and brain tumours. Current EEG systems are cumbersome and it can be difficult to use them with young children, or people who are highly anxious. Testing is done in specialised laboratories and usually takes an hour. This project is designing light-weight, simple to use EEG devices that can be used in GP clinics, or even the home, so that diagnosis and monitoring is easier, especially for those without ready access to specialist practitioners or testing facilities. The project is also looking at the ways in which the electrical activity in different areas of the brain interacts, and from this we hope to be able to use EEG to better diagnose other disorders, such as schizophrenia.
